HIV was first identified in 1984 as the cause of AIDS. By 1995, over half a million cases of AIDS had been reported in the US, resulting in devastation. However, now that HIV infection can be treated effectively, individuals can manage it without developing AIDS and so it is considered a chronic disease rather than a terminal diagnosis.
